I’m sorry to report that earlier today Governor Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1, which permits legislative staffers to form a union. In doing so, he sent a dagger into the heart of representative democracy in California as legislators already intimidated by government employee unions will soon be intimidated by their own staffers.
Fear rules most politicians and clearly Newsom is no exception, especially when the consequences fall on the politically weak such as when he chose school employee unions over students during the pandemic. The formation of government employee unions always results in reduced services for residents and costly consequences for taxpayers. AB 1 will be no exception.
